It’s a classic cafe experience that draws a steady flow of regulars and those looking for a reliable breakfast or a casual bite throughout the day.

The atmosphere leans towards welcoming and unpretentious, with a friendly team that makes an effort to know their customers. You can tell this is a place where mornings start steadily busy, especially with folks eager for a hearty breakfast plate or just a good cup of tea or coffee paired with home-baked scones or apple pie. This ease of service despite the steady pace speaks to a well-run, community-rooted spot where locals feel comfortable lingering over conversation or grabbing a quick meal on the go.

Food portions here tend to be generous, and the fare is straightforward but solidly satisfying — fresh, homemade dishes without any showy frills. From perfectly cooked eggs to substantial breakfast plates and a diverse cake selection, Passing Time Cafe thrives on offering consistency. It’s the kind of place families, workers, and regular visitors seem to flock to when they want nourishment that feels like homemade, paired with dependable service.

Visitors should expect some bustle, especially during typical breakfast and lunchtime hours, but the wait usually feels part of the friendly, neighborhood rhythm rather than a nuisance. Great home made food, all freshly made. The portions are really generous. A great selection of cakes and scones. Service is excellent, everyone is friendly and helpful. If it's just a cuppa and a piece of cake, or a full english breakfast you want, this is the place to come. Always busy, so be prepared to wait for a table, but it's worth it.

This was our first time in this cafe and it certainly will not be our last. Friendly efficient service and the food was superb in both quality and quantity. An extensive and diverse menu to suit all tastes. Thank you

We often go to Chester-le-Street from North Shields just to dine at the Cafe as Allison, Paul, Neil and staff are so friendly and welcoming. The menu, which we have sampled quite a few variations of are excellent. The scones are so gorgeous we always bring some home with us. It is a fantastic experience.

Second breakfast in here and the latest was every bit as good as the first. Came highly recommended and didn’t disappoint. Full English again, quality food and perfectly poached eggs. Not a trace of grease anywhere. Lovely thick proper toast and butter pats supplied. Tasty coffee and nice friendly staff. I have seriously tried every establishment in Chester that sell full English and this is the best imo. Will certainly try the rest of the home made food menu.
